Whether it’s common people exercising or the athletes, you must have probably seen many people including athletes wearing compression garments. The close-fitting socks, leggings or sleeves, and more different kinds of compression garments help in the performance and recovery. But many people have doubts about whether compression garments really work or not. Today in this article, we will see whether the compression garments work or not. Besides that, you also get compression garments for lymphedema

Compression garments also help in treating acute exercise and sports injuries in the first 24 hours to 72 hours and in that group of runners were wearing different kinds of compression clothing. There has been evidence from several studies and research that compression garments can help people with muscle fatigue that occurs after exercise. Let us look at the working of the compression garment in theory. Theoretically, the compression garments are very useful for athletes in the following ways –

During exercise –

One of the things you will know about compression garments is that it increases the flow of blood and oxygen delivery to the tissues. It makes the exercise more efficacious and less tiring. The tight-fit compression garments increase the proprioception i.e. awareness of the body in space as the compression garments improve the movement and posture.

After exercise –

Another thing, you will know about the compression garments is that it works like a low-level massage and applies pressure on the muscles to minimize or reduce the DOMS i.e. delayed onset muscle soreness. In addition, you should know that compression garments increase the temperature of the skin and tissues which in turn increases the blood flow. It also promotes healing. Compression garments work the same way in which heat therapy works.

Some of these advantages are supported or backed by anecdotal evidence. However, numerous studies that have been performed can give light on whether these claims are supported by scientific research.

First Theory – Compression Garments Helps in Performance during Exercise –

As per the research, the needed benefits for the performance are mostly not found. Besides that, a review of the studies showing the runners wearing a compression garment showed no important improvement in their performance. The speed of the runner and their stamina were unaffected by wearing or by the use of the compression clothing. Whereas there have been individual studies that have shown that small performance gains are thereby the use of the compression garments, if taken as a whole the experts suggest that evidence is inconclusive and limited.

Second Theory – Compression Garments Help in Recovery after Exercise –

Whereas the evidence about the performance during exercise is required, there seem to be good examples of how the compression garments can assist with recovery after exercise. When the compression garments are worn after the workouts, they can provide important relief from fatigue and muscle swelling. In addition, as per the review of the studies, it can assist the muscle tissues to recover on a faster basis.

Experts are there who have suggested that it is hard to draw conclusions regarding the efficaciousness of the compression garments from the studies. It is because there are several variables in each study. For instance, the type of exercise, which was done, then what kind of compression garment did the person use and what measures were taken or used as indicators of performance or for recovery, etc.

Besides that, researchers also admit that there is a very strong chance of a psychological placebo effect, with the use and wearing of compression garments. If you think that the exercise or recovery was easy and it helped you by the use of the compression garment, then you can be correct. The placebo effects can sometimes produce true results or real results.
